Detailed view of a geometric mosaic tile pattern with circular designs creating an artistic pavement.

Mosaic art is one of the oldest creative traditions in the world, with ancient mosaics still marveled over to this day. Yet despite how prevalent it is, it can be hard to find places to learn to do mosaics around DC.

I have always been obsessed with tile. I love looking at different tile designs, and I have very strong opinions on what I see. With that obsession, I don’t know why it took me so long to try mosaics. I guess I just never thought of myself as an artist, but once I started, my mind started going wild with all the things I could do with it.

But I quickly realized that it was difficult to find mosaic classes in DC. This list is the result of my search, and goes over the different options, what kinds of classes and courses they offer, skill level, and cost.

The bee is made of small, colored tiles in shades of black, yellow, and red, with one wing unfinished and composed of white tile fragments. Surrounding the frame are crafting supplies, including glue, a blue-handled tool, a reference guide, and a labeled bag of mosaic tiles.

Tips for Getting Started

I recently started doing mosaics, and there are a few things that I have learned that I didn’t think about when I started that I want to share.

Mosaics take longer than you expect they will. You will spend most of your time cutting the tiles and adhering them to your working surface, but there’s also time in planning your design and grouting it. Many workshops have you do one small project over 1.5 to 3 hours.

Adhesive and grout are messy, and you should wear clothes you don’t mind ruining. You’ll also want to take off any rings as well. I wear an apron when grouting to protect my clothes.

Grout can’t be washed down the drain since it’s cement, so you’ll be washing your hands and your tools outside. If it’s winter, it’s going to be chilly.

Many of the absolute beginner classes will provide all materials you need, but others you will need to bring your own supplies. Many people think of the tessera and the tile cutters, but a pair of large tweezers is also handy to have around.

Conclusion

Square mosaic made from layered, jagged slate pieces arranged in a radiating pattern, with a central circular cluster of blue, purple, and white glass beads and a flower-shaped bead in the middle. The mosaic sits on bright crinkled orange tissue paper, creating a bold color contrast.
