Rent Cafe broke down the square footage available if you were paying $1,700 for each zip code in those cities, including in Washington, DC.

Understanding what size apartment you get at a price point is a helpful measure of affordability that doesn’t always come across when comparing the rent based on something like the number of bedrooms. Places like New York City are notorious for shoebox-sized apartment that are technically two bedrooms.
